How Dining Works on Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages’ food philosophy is different by design. Before you step on board, here are the key things that make their approach unique:
1. No Hidden Fees (Well, Mostly)
The best part? All specialty dining is included in your cruise fare. This is a huge shift from other cruise lines where you pay an extra fee for a premium dining experience. There are, of course, some up charges—like adding a lobster tail or ordering premium whiskey pairings—but the vast majority of food and menus (even the fine dining ones) are totally free.
2. Ditch the Dress Codes
You won’t find a single "formal night." The overall vibe on a Virgin ship is described as "come-as-you-are, upscale chic." If you want to get dressed up for a fancy dinner, go for it! But you will also be completely in place in jeans and a nice top. The only real rule is to wear some kind of footwear and avoid swimwear in the dining rooms.
3. Make Reservations Early
While you won’t have a set dining time, reservations are essential, especially for popular spots like The Wake or Gunbae. As a general rule, you can start booking your dinner slots 45 days before your sail date. (depending on your fare booked, layoalty status etc. booking window may differ. Do it as soon as the window opens! They will hold some slots for walk-ins, but the peace of mind of having a booking is worth it. For breakfast, brunch and lunch, most spots are walk-in or resrvations can be made on board.
4. There's No Main Dining Room
Instead of one massive hall with timed seating, you are free to explore and rotate through each of the specialty restaurants throughout your cruise. Eat at a different place every night or revisit your favorites.
The Must-Try Restaurants: A Full Guide
With 20+ eateries, it can be hard to decide. Here’s a breakdown of the ship’s most iconic and unique dining spots:
The Test Kitchen (Concept & Experiential Dining)
This is not just a meal; it’s an event. The Test Kitchen is designed like a sterile laboratory (complete with test tube lighting and menu descriptions that are just a list of ingredients). Your chef will lead you through a 6-course prefix menu, taking traditional pairings and presenting them in completely unexpected ways (e.g., “Mushroom” becomes a savory dessert).
Vibe: Sophisticated, intellectual, and completely experimental.
Must-Try Dish: The menu here changes, but any form of the Mushroom dish or the Beef is usually a hit.
Gunbae (Lively Korean BBQ)
This is, hands down, the most high-energy spot on the ship. Each table is centered around a flaming-hot Korean-style grill, and you are led in drinking games (using a powerful shot of Soju) by your server. Everything is cooked right in front of you and designed for sharing.
Vibe: Electric, loud, communal, and incredibly fun.
Must-Try Dish: The Korean Fried Chicken starter and the Seafood Platter (specifically the scallops).
Extra Virgin (Elevated Italian)
A cozy, authentic restaurant dedicated to everything fresh and handmade. Start with an enormous, shared charcuterie board and move on to fresh pasta that melts in your mouth. This feels like a true upscale neighborhood trattoria.
Vibe: Warm, romantic, and inviting.
Must-Try Dish: The Oxtail Agnolotti or the Cacio e Pepe. Do not skip the tableside AFFOGATO
The Wake (Sophisticated Steak & Seafood)
This is the spot for your most elegant "formal-feeling" meal. The Wake is a spectacular, multi-level restaurant located at the very back of the ship, offering incredible views. The menu is a classic, upscale take on an American steakhouse and seafood grill.
Vibe: Glamorous, mid-century modern, and dramatic.
Must-Try Dish: The Salt Baked Dorade or the Filet Mignon. (Tip: book a reservation for either sunset or the first night of your cruise to get the best window seats).
Pink Agave (Upscale Mexican)
Forget chips and salsa. Pink Agave is a sexy, vibrant spot that focuses on complex, high-end dishes from the interior of Mexico. The bar here is also stocked with over 50 varieties of Mezcal and Tequila, so prepare for incredible cocktails.
Vibe: Seductive, colorful, and perfect for date night.
Must-Try Dish: The Choclo (corn) appetizer and the Duck. (And a smoky Mezcal Negroni to wash it down).
Razzle Dazzle (Veggie-Forward with a Twist)
Don’t let the "vegetarian" label fool you—this is one of the most popular spots on the ship for everyone. It’s vibrant, bold, and features a "naughty" side of the menu where you can add meat to almost anything. It’s also the go-to spot for the best boozy brunch on the high seas.
Vibe: High-contrast "Dazzle" camouflage decor, upbeat, and modern.
Must-Try Dish: The Impossible Burger or the Mushroom Tartare. If you’re feeling "naughty," order the Secret Steak.
Quick Bites & Casual Eateries
Not all of Virgin’s best food is found at a sit-down dinner. Here is where you should head for a more casual meal:
The Galley
Virgin Voyages’ answer to the buffet, and it’s a total game-changer. Instead of huge warming trays, The Galley is a high-end food hall with 10 distinct "shops." You order from a digital tablet, and your food is made to order and brought to your table.
The Burger Bar: Incredible customizable burgers (they have a fantastic veggie option, too).
Daily Mix: A fresh and inventive salad and soup station.
Taco Shack: Exactly what it sounds like, perfect for a quick lunch.
Hot Off the Press: For sandwiches and paninis.
Diner & Dash: For a 24/7, full-service, made-to-order breakfast.
The Pizza Place
Another Virgin fan favorite. They will whip up a fresh, wood-fired personal pizza in minutes. The crust is thin, crispy, and perfection.
Must-Try: The Pepperoni or the Chicken and Bacon. It's open until the very early hours of the morning, making it the ultimate post-karaoke stop.
Sun Club Café
A small, outdoor spot located on the upper deck, perfect for a light, healthy meal while lounging by the pool. It offers delicious, nutrient-packed Poke bowls that are completely custom-made.
The Dock & The Dock House
These are some of the most beautiful spots on the ship, located at the back of the vessel. Part indoor lounge (The Dock House) and part outdoor terrace (The Dock), this is the place to enjoy stunning ocean views while snacking on delicious, Mediterranean-inspired small bites.
The Social Club (American Classics)
Located right near the arcade and gaming area, this is your go-to for "fairground" style comfort food. It’s the perfect place to grab a bite while playing a round of air hockey or waiting for a show to start.
The Food: Think elevated stadium snacks—gourmet Hot Dogs (with creative toppings), crispy Chicken Wings, and fresh Popcorn.
Vibe: Nostalgic, casual, and high-energy.
Lick Me Till I Scream (The Sweet Treat)
No cruise is complete without ice cream, and Virgin does it with a wink. This artisanal scoop shop offers a rotating selection of high-quality, handmade ice cream and sorbet.
The Scoop: The flavors change daily, ranging from classic Madagascar Vanilla to more adventurous options like Salted Caramel or Espresso.
Pro Tip: It’s included in your fare, so don’t be afraid to go back for seconds (or thirds) to try the daily rotation.
Bon voyage and, more importantly, bon appétit! Your taste buds are in for a treat.
